The translation process

Depending on what kind of translation is required different translators are used, but the process is similar. A translation of a marketing website for a boutique hotel is a very different prospect to a technical description of a vacuum pump.

Stage One: Project Analysis

We always like to review the entire content to be translated within its final presentation format (be that a website, a software application or a brochure). We look at the following to develop a translation project scope:

Target language(s): what languages and dialects the content will be translated to.

Volume: the number of words, pages and files we need to work with.

File format: what different file formats we need to work with to produce publication ready translations

Technical skills: does the content involve specialist knowledge/skills/vocabulary on the part of the translator? For example, phramaceutical product translations require different skills from a legal contract translation.

Timeframe: what is the target turnaround time of the client? 

Additional services: does the client require e.g. SEO or PPC services in the target language?

From this we can then develop a translation project scope and a translation quote for the client.

Stage Two: Translator selection

Using the information from Stage One, we can select the most appropriate translators for the project. In some languages/specialities there are worldwide shortages of suitable translators. Where we do not have suitable translators available from within our team we will contact affilliated agencies to see if they have suitable translators available. Should this be occur we will advise the client prior to confirming any contract.

Stage Three: Contracting

We will provide a detailed quote for your translation contract. In the quote we will specify all of the information above, as well as a set of written terms and conditions. 

When the terms and condtions have been agreed, we then schedule the translation work to be done and confirm delivery date.

Stage Four: Translation and delivery

As we work through the translation, there may be points that need clarification or explanation. We rely on prompt communication with the client to help explain any content that is unclear to us.

Prior to delivery of the final content, all translations are edited and proofread. The only variance to this process is where the delivered translation is transformed in some way after we deliver it (for example, XML strings are used to populate a website). Here we conduct the final proofread after you have uploaded the translation to your system so we can check for any encoding/layout issues.
